Two Nats Dominican Leaguers Suspended

Posted Jul 23, 2010

Busy week in the minors on the substance abuse front. Even before the testing for HGH went into effect, two Nationals pitchers in the Dominican found themselves in trouble.

Major League Baseball made a sweep through the Dominican Republic this past week and on their rounds, caught two Nationals pitchers using banned substances.

Pitchers Juan Diaz and Jorge Hernandez were both suspended for 50 games. Diaz was caught using Nandrolone and Hernandez was snagged for Boldenone.

Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid that produces muscle growth, increases red blood cell production and bone density. Boldenone is an anabolic steroid developed initially for use by veterinarians on horses. Boldenone produces nitrogen retention in the body.

Diaz (2-4, 5.74) is in his first season with the Nationals and has started six of the seven games that he has pitched in this season.

Hernandez (2-1-4, 2.05) has pitched in 13 games for the DSL Nationals and converted all four of his save attempts. Hernandez is also in his first season in the Nationals organization.
