No Surprises In Nationals First Cuts

Ross Detwiler, Mike O'Connor and eight other players were the first cuts of the spring for the Washington Nationals. None of the players cut were expected to make the Nationals team out of spring training.

It's a day that every young player knows is coming and doesn't want to face; Cut down day.

The Washington Nationals made their first cuts of the spring on Tuesday, ending roster battles for ten players, although a number of them held little or no hope of making the club.

Left-hander Justin Jones, right-handers Bobby Brownlie, Preston Larrison and J.D. Martin, catcher Javier Herrera, infielders Chris Marrero and Matt Whitney and outfielder Destin Hood were all sent to the minor league camp for reassignment. Those players will be officially assigned to a minor league club in the near future. The Nationals also assigned left-handers Mike O'Connor (AAA Syracuse) and Ross Detwiler (AA Harrisburg) to minor league clubs for the 2009 season.

Marrero and Hood were simply in camp to get their feet wet, although both figure in the long range plans for the Nationals. None of the other players who were cut figured greatly into the Nationals plans for the 2009 season at the major league level.

Detwiler struggled last season, but is getting a promotion to AA Harrisburg this season. The 23 year old left-hander was taken in the first round (sixth overall pick) of the 2007 Draft and pitched for the Nationals in September of 2007, throwing one shutout inning against Atlanta. Last season, he pitched at Potomac and went 8-8, 4.86 in 26 starts.
