Bowden Calls it Quits

The center attraction in the Nationals most recent circus has decided to end his run. General manager Jim Bowden announced his resignation Sunday morning amid a swirling controversy regarding prospects from the Dominican Republic.

Stating that he had become too much of a distraction to the Washington Nationals, GM Jim Bowden resigned Sunday morning at an emotional press conference. Bowden, who is under investigation for alleged improprietaries in dealing with players from the Dominican Republic, was said to be on thin ice, but was ultimately the one who knocked himself out of the fight.

At a press conference along with team president Stan Kasten and assistant GMs Bob Boone and Mike Rizzo, Bowden announced that he couldn't allow himself to be a distraction to the club.

"It saddens me, but I feel it's in the best interest of two of the things I love the most: That's the Washington Nationals and baseball," said Bowden.

For his part, Kasten had nothing more to add other than to thank Bowden for his service and announce that there was no immediate announcement on who would take over as GM. Boone and Rizzo could both be candidates and Toronto Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava might also be considered. LaCava was rumored to be getting the job this past week when rumors regarding Bowden's demise were flying.

Bowden's tenure with the club has been tenuous, including an arrest for DUI, various trades and player signings that have been questioned both inside and outside of the organization. The latest scandals - the misrepresentation of prospect Esmailyn Gonzalez' age and allegations of skimming player bonuses for Dominican players - have both come under Bowden's watch and ultimately led to his downfall.
