While the Nationals acknowledge that they need help on the offensive side of the ledger, there is never a bad time to add pitching. The Nationals officially inked right-hander Daniel Cabrera to a one-year deal.

Daniel Cabrera wasn't one of the biggest names on the free agent market, but he's thrown 384 innings over the past two seasons and adding a veteran who can give the Nationals a good number of innings was a key move. In each of the last two seasons, Cabrera has averaged six innings per start.

The downside is that the past two seasons haven't been anywhere near Cabrera's best, but perhaps some work with pitching coach Randy St.Claire can fix that problem. Coming into the 2007 season, Cabrera had a career ERA of 4.75 and a 31-31 career record with the Orioles. In the past two seasons, Cabrera has gone 17-28 and has an ERA of 5.41 with Baltimore.

Cabrera has allowed a growing number of home runs over the past two seasons, which has led to many of his problems. While Cabrera's walk numbers have always been high - 5.5 walks per nine innings in his first three seasons and 4.6 in the last two - his home runs allowed numbers have taken off. Cabrera allowed 0.8 home runs per nine innings in his first three major league seasons and that number has moved to 1.2 home runs per nine innings. Cabrera has also seen his strikeout numbers dip from 7.7 per nine innings to 6.1 per nine over the past two seasons.

The National League hasn't been particularly friendly to Cabrera, who was 2-11, 6.08 in his career against National League clubs.
