Potomac Grabs First Carolina League Title

Posted Sep 13, 2008

Potomac came out and put a quick end to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Friday night with an 8-2 win to take the Carolina League Championship.

Erik Arnesen gave Potomac 6.2 innings of strong work to lead the P-Nats to an 8-2 win over Myrtle Beach to claim the franchise's first Carolina League Championship. The title is the first for a Nationals full-season league team.

Arnesen gave up a solo home run to Ernesto Mejia to lead off the seventh inning before picking up two quick outs. From there though a walk and a ground rule double put runners on second and third and manager Randy Knorr decided to go to the bullpen. Jack Spradlin came on to get a ground ball out and end the threat, preserving Potomac's 8-2 lead. Kyle Gunderson and Josh Wilkie each handled an inning of work to preserve the National's lead.

Potomac scored in each of the first four innings, thanks in part to home runs from Dee Brown and Boomer Whiting. Brown later drove in another run on an RBI single, giving him three RBI on the night.
