Nats Minor League Roundup: Kim Makes a Bid
Josh Karp pitched two scoreless innings against the Albuquerque Isotopes to get credit for the win in a wild game for the Zephyrs on Tuesday night. New Orleans batted around in the eighth and scored six runs to take the win.
Melvin Neives hit a pair of homers in that game and Brendan Harris drove in five runs.
Outfielder Rich Lane of the AA Harrisburg Senators has a disappointing .224 batting average, but in these Moneyball days one has to be impressed with his OBP of .334. The lefty-hitting Lane has 18 walks to go with his 24 hits.
Harrisburg has placed Josh Labandeira on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. The shortstop was just beginning to regain the form that helped him win the Senators' player of the year award in 2004. He came to the team late after recovering from an offseason injury and got off to what charitably could be described as a slow start. Labandeira got one hit in his first 14 at bats and committed errors on two of his first three chances in the field. Following that, Labandeira started to heat up and was on a modest six for 16 roll when he landed on the DL.
Second baseman Javier Rodriguez went three for four Wednesday to lead A Potomac to a 6-3 win over Kinston. That raised his batting average to .303 and helped boost his OBA to a healthy .370.
In fact, most of the Potomac Nats are doing a good job getting on base. Of the 11 players who have appeared in at least 10 games, eight of them have an OBP of .323 or better.
