Oakland A's MLN: Roster Movement

Wilfredo Solano has been released.

We track several recent moves within the Oakland A's organization.

Solano and Fisher Released

The Oakland A's cut ties with two players recently: infielder Wilfredo Solano and reliever Carlos Fisher.

Solano was an international free agent signing on July 2nd, 2009. He received a seven-figure signing bonus as a 16-year-old from Venezuela. Solano debuted with the A's in 2010 in the Dominican Summer League and then made his US debut in 2011 in the AZL.

After moving up to Vermont in 2012, he got his first taste of Low-A ball at the start of 2013. He struggled and was injured early in the season and spent much of the first half of the year at extended spring training. After hitting under .200 in 38 games for the AZL A's and the Vermont Lake Monsters, Solano was released.

Solano never had an OPS higher than 600 in any season with the A's.

Fisher joined the organization this year as a minor league free agent. The right-hander spent the entire year with Double-A Midland. In 48.2 relief innings, Fisher posted a 3.88 ERA. He struck-out 71 and walked 33.

Hernandez Promoted

With Sonny Gray moving into the A's rotation for the foreseeable future, the A's were able to move Carlos Hernandez into the Sacramento River Cats' rotation.

Hernandez made the move up to Triple-A after compiling a 2.18 ERA and a 96:36 K:BB ratio in 132 innings for Double-A Midland. Hernandez allowed two runs in six innings in his first start for Sacramento. Reliever Darren Byrd was sent from Sacramento to Stockton and Hernandez took Byrd's spot on the River Cats' roster.

Carpenter and Castillo Signed

The A's signed two minor league free agents for the Double-A Midland roster this week: right-handers Drew Carpenter and Jesus Castillo.

Carpenter, a former Phillies' prospect with 22 major league appearances, was added into the Midland rotation. This is Carpenter's fourth organization this season. He has also spent time with the Angels, Rockies and Cubs organizations this year. Carpenter allowed a run in four innings in his Midland debut.

Castillo joins the A's from the Mexican Summer League, where he had a 2.45 ERA and a 42:10 K:BB in 51.1 innings. Castillo was a closer with 23 saves. He tossed a scoreless inning in his Midland debut on Thursday.
