Arizona Fall League: Surprise 10 – (@) Mesa 8
17-12-1, 0.5 GB
After Surprise and Peoria both won their respective games on Tuesday, the Saguaros still sit one-half game behind the Javelinas with two regular-season games to play.
Shortstop Hanser Alberto (.356/.391/.458 in 16 games) extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Through 16 Fall League contests, the 20-year-old Alberto is 21-for-59 (.356) with two doubles and two triples. He’s drawn two walks, struck out four times, and stolen three bases in seven attempts.
Cleanup-hitting first baseman Chris McGuiness went 0-for-5, striking out once and driving home a run. The hitless performance dropped his batting average to .286.
On the mound, Saguaros starting pitcher Ben Henry continued to struggle with command. Throwing just the first inning, Henry threw only 11 of his 21 pitches for a strike while yielding two runs on a hit and two walks.
Henry, 23, has the following stat-line in four AFL starts––7.0 ip, 10 h, 9 r, 9 bb, 4 k.
Ben Rowen (3.46 ERA/.188 BAA) followed Henry with a scoreless second inning, working around a hit and a walk. He fanned one.
Left-hander Jimmy Reyes (0.68 ERA/.152 BAA) closed out the victory with two hitless, scoreless frames. He also walked one and struck out one.
Dominican Winter League
Tigres del Licey leadoff hitter and centerfielder Leonys Martin (.293/.375/.476) broke a scoreless tie with his solo round-tripper in the top of the 10th inning. Overall, Martin went 2-for-4 with that home run and a walk. He also struck out twice and was caught stealing twice.
Through 21 Dominican Winter League contests, Martin is 24-for-82 (.293) with four doubles, a triple, and three home runs. He’s drawn 11 walks, struck out 20 times, and stolen six bases in nine attempts.
While Martin gave Licey the lead in the top of the 10th, a pair of errors from top Rangers prospects Jurickson Profar (SS) and Mike Olt (3B) led to two Cibao runs in the bottom of the frame.
The inning started with a Profar throwing error, and it was followed by an Olt fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Profar (0/4) and Olt (0/4) were both hitless in four at-bats on Tuesday.
Leury Garcia scored the game-winning run for Cibao in the 10th after reaching on a walk. He also singled earlier in the contest.
Garcia was making his first winterball start in center field. Being developed as something of a super-utility guy due to his strong all-around defensive skills, he saw limited action in center during the regular season with Double-A Frisco.
Nine-hole hitting Licey right fielder Engel Beltre saw his average drop to .364 after he whiffed twice in four hitless at-bats.
Venezuelan Winter League
La Guaira southpaw Joe Ortiz (3.75 ERA/.200 BAA) earned his fifth hold despite surrendering a run in two-thirds of an inning. He recorded a groundout and a flyout and gave up a single.
Lara utilityman Guilder Rodriguez entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and grounded out in his lone plate appearance. He then remained in the game at second base.
Mostly used as a late-inning defensive replacement and pinch runner for the Cardenales, Rodriguez is 6-for-36 (.167) at the plate in 18 LVBP games this season.
Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)
Tiburones first baseman Jhonny Gomez (.384/.455/.535) continues to lead his club in just about every offensive category through 22 games. On Tuesday, Gomez had a double and two walks in five trips. He also scored three runs and committed an error in the field.
Aragua leadoff man and centerfielder Teodoro Martinez had two singles and a walk in his five trips.
For the Navegantes, DH Eduard Pinto went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. In three Liga Paralela games, the young prospect is now 4-for-12 with a pair of two-baggers.
Magallanes right-handed reliever Randol Rojas (4.66 ERA/.237 BAA) hurled a perfect seventh inning, getting two groundouts and a punchout.

Mexican Pacific League
Mazatlan right fielder Joey Butler (.230/.345/.324) continued to scuffle in Mexico, as he went 0-for-3 on Tuesday. Since hitting a home run in his first LMP plate appearance, the Mississippi native is just 16-for-73 with four doubles.
Puerto Rican Winter League

Former Rangers farmhands Ryan Tatusko and Clayton Hamilton posted solid work on the mound. Tatusko, who got the start, hurled five innings of one-run ball. Hamilton worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
